Stepping into Sustainability: Work Experience at DBS by Molly

I recently spent a week at RWE on work experience where I had the opportunity to explore the Dogger Dank South (DBS) offshore wind project. Over the course of the week, I observed the project from the perspective of several key teams including consents, environmental management and civil engineering.

A key part of my experience involved working on a small project focused on the access road leading to the converter stations for DBS. With guidance from a civil engineer, I explored the technical considerations and constraints involved in road design and construction, as well as forming an estimated cost book for the road construction. This work gave me a deeper understanding of the level of planning and detail required in infrastructure development and the time and expense of these projects.

Throughout the week, I attended several presentations that covered a wide range of topics such as solar energy, ecological assessments and both geophysical and geotechnical analysis. These sessions were engaging and thought-provoking, helping me to learn all about different specialties within the company.

I also had the chance to speak with a variety of people across the company on a day-to-day basis from engineers and interns to traders and analysts. These conversations offered me a broader view of the company and the range of roles in the energy sector.

Overall, I greatly enjoyed my time at RWE and it was both a challenging and valuable learning experience which has deepened my interest in renewable energy and broadened my future career prospects. I am especially grateful to everyone who took the time to speak with me, answer my questions and share their experiences. Their insights and support made the week far more enriching and helped me see the range of paths available within the energy sector.
