DBS offshore wind farms STEM education update
We are committed to fostering thriving and sustainable local economies by investing in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education, job creation, skills development and training. Our initiatives help people to develop essential skills, enhance employability, and explore promising careers in offshore wind and beyond.
By February 2026, our education partner UKSTEM Ltd. had delivered the Supergrid activity to 1,264 pupils through primary school sessions, Colliderfest 2025, and Humber STEM events, plus engaged members of the public attending STEM events.
Supergrid is a hands-on wind turbine design challenge where participants work in teams to be the most efficient energy provider. Through the Supergrid software, power outputs from all the teams are seen simultaneously, creating a very competitive atmosphere.
Feedback from schools participating in the Supergrid activity
The feedback from participating schools has been fantastic, and there is ongoing interest in the DBS projects and the learning opportunities the projects are offering.
- Ticton Primary School: “Thank you for coming into Tickton CE Primary School. The children absolutely loved doing the Supergrid activity and it linked really well with all our work that we have been doing on climate change. It really helped the children to think about the use of Science in future careers and they loved carrying out the practical activities.”
- Molescroft Primary School: “It has been a very engaging day which the children have loved. The activity has highlighted every part of STEM, which is a big feature at our school and has also shown the children real life application for maths. Any example where you can show children how science and maths is used in the real world and in the future is so useful. The careers element of the day has been a key part to show the children the jobs that they could be doing in the future. It’s been a really exciting day, the expertise in delivery and quality of the resources has been excellent.”
- ST Marys Primary School: “Thank you so much for the fabulous STEM session with my Year 5 class, last week. The children really enjoyed all the elements of their 'project' and I felt they gained a lot of knowledge and developed skills. The content was inspiring and pitched at the right level. There were lots of links to our curriculum content and it supported the school's ethos from a Global Citizen perspective. Once again, thanks for delivering the session and I hope to see you again next year.”
- Woodmansey Primary School: "The best STEM activity we've ever had in school thank you!"
Resources and teacher training
In support of classroom learning, we have provided 14 kit boxes to schools containing offshore wind resources. These kits include a total of 104 model wind turbines, voltmeters, cables, and protractors.
We have delivered staff training which contributes to teachers’ Continuous Professional Development (CPD) and videos are also available on the DBS website for everyone to access.
Feedback from teachers attending CPD training:
- “Very good CPD, excellent links and content.”
- “Very interesting and useful resources. We will be considering how this will fit into our long term plan for science/DT [Design & Technology] in the curriculum.”
- “Lots of information/links that will be useful. Great range of resources which will help develop our STEM sessions/clubs in school.”
- “Working in mixed age groups, I could see this working as a whole school activity for us.”
- “Really accessible information and amazing resources for the school to enjoy using. Thank you!”
We are also supporting two UKSTEM initiatives:
- East Riding Business Education Network: This network provides a space for teachers to connect with each other and with local businesses. Regular meetings offer opportunities for professional development and curriculum enhancement through partnerships with STEM-related companies.
- ‘Who am I?’ Careers Game: After a successful trial in a primary school, this game—designed to introduce students to different STEM careers—is now available for schools to borrow.
We continue to work with our partners, supporting STEM education in the region and look forward to engaging with even more education providers.
