Young engineers rise to the Wind Turbine Challenge at Hull STEM event

Eighty primary school pupils put their engineering and problem-solving skills to the test during an exciting wind turbine challenge delivered by DBS as part of a STEM event in Hull.

Throughout the day, children worked in teams to complete the construction of a model wind turbine, designing and assembling blades before testing their creations. The aim was to build a turbine capable of hoisting a weight and lifting it in the quickest possible time.

The hands-on activity encouraged pupils to explore key concepts in renewable energy, engineering design and teamwork, while developing their creativity and critical thinking skills.

The challenge proved highly popular, with enthusiastic participation from all 80 children. As teams refined their designs and competed against the clock, pupils gained a valuable insight into how engineers use innovation and testing to solve real-world challenges. A huge 'congratulations' to a team from Penshurst Primary school who completed their challenge race in only 19.41 seconds!

The activity formed part of a wider STEM activity day for primary schools in Hull and the East Riding, aimed at inspiring the next generation of scientists, engineers and innovators across Hull and the surrounding area.
