Inspiring the next generation during Construction and Engineering week
During Construction and Engineering week in September 2025, we took part in a careers event at the Lincolnshire Showground. Primary and secondary schools from all over Lincolnshire attended the three-day event that showcased a variety of companies, skills and careers across the renewable energy sector.
We supplied an interactive stand manned by members of the DBS team and supported by our education provider, UKSTEM. Young people were able to participate in hands-on activities across a range of energy assets including offshore wind, solar, carbon capture and storage and hydrogen.
Over the three days more than 200 young people learned about the variety of job roles and skills required by the DBS offshore wind farms and across broader renewable technologies. They had opportunities to test model wind turbine blade angles, learn how solar panels work and even raced hydrogen buggies.
Anna Bendall, senior consents manager for DBS said, “This was my first experience at a STEM event and it was wonderful watching the students put their STEM skills into practice with the model wind turbines. Their task was to use a protractor to work out the best angle for the blades to maximise electricity generation output. They worked well in teams with a lot of curiosity and there was huge excitement when they saw the amount of generation creep up with each tweak they made to the blades!
I was inspired by the enthusiasm of the young people attending and hope that we, in turn, have inspired them to study STEM subjects and perhaps even consider working in offshore wind in the future.”
