DBS at Big Bang on Location, Grimsby

Members of the DBS team had a fantastic day in Grimsby inspiring young people to consider STEM subjects and a career in offshore wind during the Big Bang on Location Event on 04 November 2024.
The free event, organised by Engineering UK, introduced over 400 students to a range of offshore wind career opportunities in their area. Activities run by our Education Specialist, UKSTEM, focussed on conservation and team work. Students discussed conservation as they steered a robotic burrowscope to access ‘burrows’ and identify birdlife nesting in an imitation cliff face while a teamwork challenge required students to work together in pairs to successfully steer and drive a miniature Robotic Operated Vehicle (ROV) around a course.
“Offshore wind is a really hidden career and children and young people don’t know it is there. It’s really important to come to events like the Big Bang where we can engage with young people and get them to understand what we do in the offshore wind industry.” Mike Cargill, DBS, Education Specialist.
Big Bang on Location is a new event, designed to inspire young people through interactions with STEM role models, sector experts and industry organisations and to unveil exciting potential career paths in the offshore wind sector. The sector has a real need for engineers and technologists, and with an estimated 720,000 new jobs required to transition to Net Zero by 2030, it’s an exciting career opportunity for young people in education today.
The DBS team was delighted to be invited to support the event and looks forward to working with young people in the area at future events.
