Powering up curiosity: young people and families take on the Supergrid Wind Turbine Challenge at ColliderFest 2026

Hull ColliderFest 2026, held from 12–15 March, brought together families, artists, and scientists for a vibrant celebration of creativity and discovery. With a vibrant program of interactive exhibits, live performances, and hands-on workshops, ColliderFest celebrated the fascinating overlap between science and art.

One of the festival’s standout experiences took place on 12–13 March, thanks to DBS’s engaging STEM activities for local primary school groups. Around 100 children took on the popular “Supergrid Wind Turbine Challenge”—a hands-on activity where participants designed and tested their own turbine blades through a series of fun science investigations.

The excitement continued into the weekend, attracting over 230 children and their parents, many of whom couldn’t resist coming back for another try! Each hour, the best-performing teams were awarded Supergrid medals, with our final hour champions including Elliot, Florence, William, James, Lewis, Eliot, Raphael, and Benjamin.

Through teamwork, creativity, and problem-solving, young participants explored how design choices impact energy production, gaining firsthand insight into renewable energy and the vital role of offshore wind in powering the UK’s future.
